Local Legend: Singer Songwriter | Austin Skalecki
Austin is a Local Legend because of the beautiful music he writes and performs all around the Great Lakes region and the rest of our country. I met Austin about the best way one can meet a singer-songwriter, at a small fire in the woods with some close friends and time to kill. Not only did he blow us away with his original music, but he'd play nearly any song we requested. I've never met anyone so comfortable and calm while sharing their talent around strangers. On a slow sunny day, his voice and original music have a way of bringing a smile to your face the same way a cool breeze does. His presence never impedes on the natural beauty all around him, but only enhances the moment. We’re lucky to have Austin travel around and share his gift with us. And I’m lucky to call him a friend.
1. What do you love to do outdoors, and why?
Hiking and foraging are some of my favorite outdoor activities. I love the freedom you get from isolating yourself within nature. Being surrounded by the sounds of the wind, the smell of the trees, and sights you see only when you're off the beaten path. It truly fills all the senses we have as human beings and lets us become one with all of our natural surroundings.
2. What makes the Great Lakes region special?
The natural beauty and diversity within the Great Lakes region. I've been to a lot of beautiful places in the country, but nothing feels as special as this area. I think it has elements of a lot of places I've been to, along with things that are unique and specific to the region. There are a plethora of activities to engage in and many sights to see. The community of people here and the culture of the midwest is unmatchable. I am happy to be a part of it.
3. How are you connected to this area?
I grew up here. There are few places that really strike my soul and comfort me within. This area is at the top of the list.
4. Do you have a favorite memory, moment, or place that stands out to you?
The entire Door County Peninsula is incredibly special. I also love Upper Michigan, Duluth & Superior, and Northern Wisconsin.
5. How has your passion for the outdoors impacted your life?
It keeps me sane. Whenever I need to think about life I go outdoors and that usually solves the problems. It's a great escape and it centers me.
